Hello Vigilanties! Recently on Facebook we have been asked about 10 dozen times: “Isn’t this like Comixology?” What a great question, thank you for opportunity to clarify. Not only does this need to be on the FAQ page but also we are addressing it in this post.

Let me start out by saying, I love Comixology. I personally have an account there and have purchased many, many books. Being compared to a company that enhanced the comic book industry is a great honor. Let's talk about the broad differences.

Comixology

Back in 2007 Comixology made its debut. You could buy comics and download them. You could even buy them the same day as release. In 2013 they were purchased by Amazon. This was a strange deal because Amazon already owned Jet City Comics, which is the same thing as Comixology. Had Amazon just done a large marketing push for half of what they bought Comixology for, they would have put Comixology down for the count.

They began to offer “Comixology Submit”, a chance for independent creators to get their work on their platform. Unfortunately, large creative companies like DC & Marvel overloaded the system making it so indie-comics became segregated and unnoticed.

There platform caters to the big guns in the market. Just logging on you will primarily only see Marvel, DC, IDW, & Dark Horse. They will do whatever it takes to get the exclusive deals.

Flight & Tights are the big fish here. As much as I love these, superheroes are only a fraction of the comic book industry landscape. There is very little else offered even though they have over 50 genre options.

Royalty payments are made 45 days after the end of each quarter. So in the end, you could only get paid up to 4 times a year. That's a long time for a creator to see any profits for their hard work. Plus you only get 50% AFTER credit card transaction fees are taken out.

Their platform often leads to many problems such as unlawful reproduction. It only takes 3 minutes to download and reproduce it and put it up for free on torrent sites. Fans of comics can go there and “Presto” the creator is ripped off of any royalty payments. ( Sidenote: These sites are brimming with viruses. Please avoid them at all cost, for the sake of your computer).

This is what causes creators to get paid less and less, forcing them to have a second job to earn enough money to live. Forcing them to make comics a “hobbie” instead of a career.

Do you remember the days when you would trade baseball cards or comics to your friends? Well, those days are back. Out platform allows you to sell the comics that you have purchased in the marketplace. This means that digital comics become an investment, just like paperbacks.

When it comes to the re-selling, the original creator also gets paid AGAIN! The seller gets 90% of the sale, the creator gets 8% and we only take 2%. This keeps the lights on and allows creators to make a substantial living doing what they love, making comics.

We are built on the idea that creators and fans are the heart and soul of the industry. It’s about time that somebody became a champion for them. Every single decision that I have made was with the independent comic creators in mind. I will continue to do so as long as I work for this beloved industry.
