Smart Home for the Artist in You

by Matthew Russell - Posted 11 months ago

Welcome my CryptoComics Compatriots. If you’re like me, there is nothing more important than your personal studio (aside from family). As an artist, your home is your sanctuary – a place where you can create, relax, and be inspired.

I wanted to talk to all of you today about some unusual tech that often gets overlooked. We discuss NFT, blockchain technology, and digital media a lot here. I just wanted to talk to you about some cool tech that makes the creation of this, just a little easier.

Yes, smart home technology, specifically those for an office or art studio that automates a lot of little things in order to help streamline your creations.

With the rise of smart home technology, you can now take your home to the next level by automating many of the everyday tasks that can be time-consuming and distracting. In this article, we'll explore some of the ways that smart home automation can enhance your life as an artist.

For clarity, in my home and workshop, I use Amazon Alexa although I am thinking about switching over to Apple’s home kit since so much of my work is done on either an iPad or Macbook. I just need to do more research on the particulars of this.

Smart Lighting

Lighting is one of the most important aspects of creating a comfortable and inspiring environment for your art. With smart lighting, you can customize the brightness, color, and even the temperature of your lighting to suit your mood and work. Smart bulbs can be controlled by your phone or voice commands, so you can easily adjust your lighting without ever leaving your workspace.

I personally have a setting for drawing, another preset for video recording, and another one for general work on my computer.

Smart Speakers

As an artist, you likely appreciate music and the power it has to inspire and motivate you. With smart speakers, you can listen to your favorite tunes or podcasts without ever having to touch a button. Smart speakers like the Amazon Echo or Google Home can be controlled with your voice, so you can easily change the volume, skip tracks, or play your favorite playlist without interrupting your work.

Once again, I have Alexa and on Amazon music, I have several playlists for each occasion.

  • Writing - soft classical instrumentals with the volume turned down to a 2

  • Drawing an action scene - more dynamic movie scores such as Jurassic Park with the Volume at a 4

  • General work on my computer - rap, lots of rap (Dax, Eminem, DMX) with the volume as loud as I am allowed at the time.

  • Work around the house - Les Mes soundtrack of the Broadway cast

It helps me get into the right mindset and get my job done ASAP.

Smart Security

Artists often have valuable equipment and materials in their offices & studios that need to be protected. With smart security, you can have peace of mind knowing that your home is safe and secure. Smart security systems can send you alerts when someone enters your home, and you can even view live video feeds from your phone to monitor your home when you're away.

This is different as I use a smart lock on my house, but in my studio at home, it is simply a regular interior lock. I have my entire house surrounded by video cameras and motion detectors, but inside my studio, it is like any other room.

I haven’t had much of a need to secure this particular room, more than any other room in my house, but now that I am telling you all about it, might have to upgrade security there.

Smart Outlets

If you have a lot of electronic devices in your home, you may find that managing cords and outlets can be a hassle. With smart outlets, you can easily turn off devices when you're not using them, saving energy and reducing clutter. You can also set up schedules to turn on and off devices automatically, so you never have to worry about leaving something on when you're not at home.

I have only 1 smart outlet in my studio that I tend to have just a few things plugged into; a wax warmer for a nice smell, a phone charger, and a space heater (although I should probably get a smart thermostat to handle that if my wife lets me.)

Future Plans

Aside from getting the smart thermostat and upgraded security system, there are a few things that I would like to do.

An adjustable smart desk being one. I sit way too much, either drawing or writing, I’m almost constantly sitting, and having a desk that transforms into a standing desk might just be what I need.

A smart mirror is just something I always wanted and I have DIY plans to make one with my kids. We plan on making one with and for each of my kids as a fun project and having an extra one in my office that helps me with scheduling, and displays other information could be kind of cool. Hopefully, it helps me in my general workflow. If not, I have a cool piece of tech to show off to people when they come over.

Last but not least, I want to get a smart vacuum to take care of my messes so I don’t have to. Hey, I’m still lazy. Don’t judge me.

In Conclusion

Smart home automation can make life easier and more efficient for artists. By automating everyday tasks, you can free up more time and energy to focus on your art. Whether it's smart lighting, thermostats, speakers, security, or outlets, there are plenty of ways to make your home smarter and more comfortable.
