Although he passed away on June 12, 2023, his influence continues to inspire generations of creators and fans alike. Born on January 24, 1930, Romita’s career reshaped Marvel Comics during its formative years, leaving an indelible mark on the medium.


The Early Days

John Romita Sr. began his professional journey in comics as an illustrator for Timely Comics (the predecessor of Marvel) in the late 1940s. His first penciling work was for Captain America Comics #76 in 1949, during a brief revival of the character by Atlas Comics. Over the next decade, Romita honed his skills at various publishers, including DC Comics, where he worked on romance titles like Young Love and Girls' Romances.

Romita’s polished, emotive style, rooted in the romance genre, would later become his signature—one that perfectly suited the superhero stories that defined his career.

Defining The Amazing Spider-Man

In 1966, Romita was brought on to illustrate The Amazing Spider-Man, taking over from Steve Ditko with issue #39. His dynamic yet approachable style helped reimagine the character and made Peter Parker’s world more relatable and visually stunning. During his run, Romita co-created some of Spider-Man's most iconic characters, including Mary Jane Watson, whose famous debut line—"Face it, Tiger... you just hit the jackpot!"—is etched into comic book history.
