From Fan to Pro

John Byrne’s love for comics began as a fan, drawing inspiration from legends like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. His journey from admirer to creator started in the mid-1970s when he broke into the industry with "Wheelie and the Chopper Bunch #1", published by Charlton Comics in 1975.

Byrne quickly made his mark at Marvel Comics, contributing to titles like Iron Fist and Marvel Team-Up. His clean, dynamic art style and knack for storytelling set him apart, earning him widespread recognition among fans and editors alike.

Redefining the X-Men and Fantastic Four

In 1977, Byrne began his legendary collaboration with writer Chris Claremont on The X-Men, starting with issue #108. Together, they transformed the series into one of Marvel’s most popular titles, introducing characters like Kitty Pryde and iconic storylines such as "The Dark Phoenix Saga" and "Days of Future Past". Byrne’s art brought a sense of realism and emotion to the X-Men, solidifying their place as some of Marvel’s most beloved characters.

Byrne later turned his attention to The Fantastic Four, serving as both writer and artist from 1981 to 1986. His run revitalized Marvel’s first family, blending epic cosmic adventures with deeply personal stories. Under his guidance, Fantastic Four was hailed as "The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine" once again.

Revamping Superman

In 1986, Byrne made waves at DC Comics with "The Man of Steel", a six-issue miniseries that redefined Superman for a new generation. Stripping away decades of continuity, Byrne presented a modernized take on the character, emphasizing Clark Kent’s humanity and relationships. His work laid the foundation for Superman stories for years to come, influencing comics, TV, and film.
