by Lindsey Winsemius - Posted 4 days ago

In the vibrant world of comic books, where pencils sketch the dreams and colors paint the action, the role of the inker often stands as an unsung hero.

What does an inker do? Learn about the basics of inking.

Jim Tournas, a seasoned comic book creator and inker, has spent decades refining this craft, leaving his mark on both mainstream icons and indie classics. Known today for his creator-owned sci-fi series Jetta Raye Adventures, Tournas embodies the spirit of independent storytelling while carrying a rich history of collaboration with some of the industry’s most beloved characters.

Early Years

Born with a passion for art, Tournas found his calling in the meticulous world of inking, a discipline that requires precision, patience, and an eye for enhancing the penciller’s vision. His career began to take shape as he worked on projects for major publishers, including inking Spider-Man Sunday strips and contributing to titles like Archie and Friends.

These early gigs showcased his ability to breathe life into dynamic characters, adding depth and texture to every line. But Tournas didn’t stop at superheroes—he also lent his talents to horror with Monster Squad and crime with Shylock, proving his versatility across genres.

Indie Comics

Yet, it’s his independent work that truly defines him. In 2021, Tournas launched Jetta Raye Adventures, a sci-fi comic that pays homage to the 1950s Jetta series by Dan DeCarlo while catapulting it into a modern, intergalactic setting. Under his imprint, Totally Galactic Comics, Tournas reimagined Jetta Raye as a fearless spacefaring heroine, joined by a colorful crew of friends and aliens.

The project began with a 108-page hardcover, crowdfunded to success, and has since expanded into ongoing comic issues. With a team of talented writers like Craig Boldman, Angelo DeCesare, and Tony DiGerolamo, and artists including Jeff Shultz and the Kennedy Brothers, Tournas has built a universe that blends retro charm with fresh storytelling.

Crowdfunding Success

Crowdfunding has been a cornerstone of Tournas’ indie journey, allowing him to connect directly with fans and fund his vision without the constraints of traditional publishing. His campaigns, hosted on platforms like Indiegogo and Kickstarter, have consistently exceeded goals, a testament to his growing fanbase and the appeal of Jetta’s cosmic escapades.

One standout offering was a variant cover inked by Tournas himself, alongside pencils by Pat and Tim Kennedy, showcasing his hands-on approach to every aspect of the creative process.

Beyond his own creations, Tournas has left an imprint on the broader comic community. His gallery of work includes inking tributes to legends like Joe Sinnott, with pieces featuring Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and Captain America. These collaborations highlight his respect for the medium’s history and his skill in enhancing the work of others.

He’s also a fixture at comic conventions, where he’s witnessed the evolution of these events from niche gatherings to pop-culture extravaganzas. For Tournas, conventions are more than just a marketplace—they’re a chance to meet fans, share stories, and inspire the next generation of creators.

Overcoming Challenges

Tournas’ career hasn’t been without challenges. Like many indie creators, he’s navigated the uncertainties of small-press publishing, including a notable legal victory in 2007 over unpaid work—a reminder of the perseverance required to thrive outside the mainstream. Yet, his love for inking remains unshaken. “I love inking,” he’s said, a simple statement that encapsulates his dedication to the craft.

Whether he’s refining a penciller’s lines or dreaming up Jetta’s next adventure, Tournas approaches each project with enthusiasm and a commitment to quality.
